First Up

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., in January 2019.

Here's what we're following today.

A judge on Thursday barred federal law enforcement officers in Portland, Ore., from using force against legal observers or journalists at protests if they are not suspected of committing crimes. The order will last for 14 days. The Department of Homeland Security said federal law enforcement officers are working "diligently and honorably" to enforce federal law by defending federal property and the lives of fellow officers against "violent anarchists" rioting in the streets.

The body of civil rights icon and longtime congressman John Lewis will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol next week. The public viewing will take place outdoors and attendees will be required to wear masks while waiting in line to pay tribute. Lewis' family has requested that people pay their respects online using the hashtags #BelovedCommunity and #HumanDignity.

President Trump announced Thursday that the Jacksonville, Fla., part of this year’s Republican National Convention has been canceled. The last-minute decision to cancel the event follows the GOP’s mad scramble over the last few months to hold a conventional party gathering in spite of the ongoing pandemic.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., took to the House floor on Thursday to admonish insults hurled at her by Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., earlier this week. Ocasio-Cortez, who has become a key voice in the progressive movement and a frequent target of Republicans, said she's concerned about an increasing acceptance of dehumanizing and misogynistic language toward women.

China will shut down the U.S. consulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu in retaliation for the U.S. shutting down China's Houston consulate this week as relations between the two countries reach their lowest point in more than 30 years.

The GOP-controlled Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a defense bill that calls for renaming U.S. military bases that honor Confederate officers. President Trump has threatened to veto the measure.

Susan Rice, the former U.N. ambassador and national security adviser, is said to be on Joe Biden’s shortlist as a vice presidential running mate. She has deep experience as an ambassador and in national security, but none as a candidate. NPR’s Don Gonyea considers Rice's odds as an unlikely contender. Click here to listen or read the story.

Nia Cosby was just four years old when her mother, Chalana McFarland, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for multiple counts of mortgage fraud. The judge in McFarland's case said he handed out a harsh sentence as a deterrent for those wishing to commit similar crimes. Last month, Cosby welcomed her mother home after McFarland was released from prison. The pair recorded a conversation for StoryCorps on their first weekend together in 15 years. Click here to listen or read the story

  • Taylor Swift quietly spent self-isolation at work on a new album, Folklore, released at midnight on July 24. Swift’s eighth studio album features collaborations with members of The National and Bon Iver.
  • The Netflix game show Floor Is Lava debuted in June and immediately became one of the streaming giant’s most-watched shows in the U.S. The obstacle-course competition is equal parts American Ninja Warrior and Honey, I Shrunk The Kids — but with pits of "lava" contestants must avoid.
  • Women who lived during colonial times in America rarely received credit for their creative work. But one scholar is reviving the works of the women who lived and composed at the Ephrata Cloister.
