A fighter jet flew over Mekelle, the main city in Ethiopia's Tgray region, earlier today, scaring people who rushed indoors.

No details of the flight are available, but it comes after the outbreak of conflict earlier this week between federal and regional government troops.

The Tigray government had declared a no-fly zone over the region on Wednesday. It is not known to have military aircraft.

The federal government has not yet commented.

Thousands of people turned out to bury seven schoolchildren who were shot dead by unknown gunmen in Cameroon's south-western city of Kumba.

Parents of the children told the BBC that their loss was deep, and no amount of punishment meted out to the killers - if they are caught - will assuage their pain.

Amongst the mourners was Cameroon’s Prime Minister Joesph Dion Ngute. He promised that the killers would not go unpunished.

He said the government had borne both the hospital and burial costs.

Gunmen stormed the Mother Francisca School on 24 October, killing the seven children.

The burial of the children is a grim reminder of the recent violence that has been witnessed in schools in Cameroon’s mainly English-speaking regions, where four attacks have been recorded in the past 11 days.

Armed separatists want the regions to secede from mainly French-speaking Cameroon.

The head of Ethiopia's Tigray region has described clashes between regional and federal troops as a "state of war".

The region would be fully mobilised for the war effort, Debretsion Gebremichael said.

He added that special forces from the Amhara region had joined federal troops in fighting Tigray government forces.

Mr Debretsion said that fighting is taking place in Ethiopia's western Tigray region, which borders Amhara.

Tigray forces had seized “almost all” the weaponry from the Ethiopian military's Northern Command, he added.

“We will not allow the [federal government] to hit us with the weapons in Tigray. We have enough weapons and now we have found additional,” Mr Debretsion said.

He also alleged that some federal soldiers had crossed the border into Eritrea on Wednesday.

“This shows their relations,” Mr Debretsion said.

A court in Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland has sentenced two men to death for the rape and murder of a 14-year old girl.

Mohamed Abdi Faray and Abdirahman Mohamed Isaq confessed to the crime after kidnapping the young girl in Bosaso city earlier this year.

In recent months there has been an increase in the number of such attacks across Somalia.

The police are currently investigating several cases, including one of a 19-year-old who was gang-raped and thrown off a six-storey building in Somalia's capital Mogadishu in September.
