America is now bracing for two monumental events in Washington: the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and the Senate trial of President  Trump. The House of Representatives impeached President Trump for the second time in 13 months on Wednesday — making him the only president to have received the rebuke twice. The case is not expected to be tried in chamber until after Biden is sworn into office next Wednesday.

Even before yesterday's House vote, Democrats openly worried about what starting impeachment proceedings would mean for the incoming president's ability to secure Senate confirmation for his Cabinet nominees and press for top priorities like coronavirus relief. 

Armed National Guard troops are already patrolling the halls of the U.S. Capitol — and many streets in Washington are already blocked off — ahead of next week’s inauguration. About 20,000 National Guard troops will likely be deployed. 

Former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is one of the defendants in a new set of charges stemming from the water crisis in the city of Flint seven years ago. Snyder was in charge when his political appointees made the water switch to save money. A lawyer for Snyder says the charge is a politically motivated smear.
