  1. CAR holds election re-run after rebel attacks

    Voters in the Central African Republic are going to the polls for a second round of legislative elections after December's first round was disrupted by rebel groups controlling about two-thirds of the country.

    Elections are being held in 118 of the CAR's 140 constituences - voting was not possible in 69 - while a second round is being held in 49 after no candidate secured an outright majority.

    The authorities in the capital, Bangui, say the security situation has now significantly improved. Both Rwanda and Russia have sent troops to back government forces.

    UN peacekeepers in the country say their forces are also better positioned to help secure the elections.

    In December, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra was re-elected with 53% of the vote, although the rebels have challenged these results.

    The UN says the rebels are led by former President François Bozizé -a charge he denies.
