With a bright and energising presence, Sanele Sithole certainly lives up to his stage name, Sun-El Musician.

Part of a burgeoning dance scene in South Africa, alongside the likes of collaborator and former TIA guest Black Coffee, his music also retains the same qualities, allowing you to bathe in its warm electro glow.

“I’ve always been a geek,” he openly admits.

Quote Message: “I’ve always just loved computers. Electronics for me was just a thing. Before I started really making my own beats, we would use a house beat and an R&B song, speed up, play both of them and make your own bootleg. That’s how it all began.”

Born in the rural ZwaZulu-Natal highlands, in a town called Mooi River, the young Sun-El decamped to Johannesburg to hone his craft.

Quote Message: “All the sounds that I really enjoyed were made in Johannesburg - soulful house music, that’s where it was celebrated. I love chords, I love vocals. I was bringing myself closer to where I felt the sound would be appreciated more.”

But his musical education was made at home – sometimes in surprising ways. First, there was the more traditional influence of his father’s vinyl.

“My dad used to play all of the records: American soul; the Commodores; Kool & the Gang; Percy Sledge. And my sister, when she brought in the kwaito vibes, it was Mawillies.”

Secondly, there was a formative experience that involved music and bathing.

Quote Message: “In the year 1994, I couldn’t even bath myself. My gran was doing the job. And I remember, on the TV, Daft Punk was playing Around The World. But I didn’t understand! I was so glued. My gran was trying to bath me and my head was just looking into the screen, watching the video.”

A truly seminal French dance duo, Daft Punk recently announced the end of their long, influential career, leading Sun-El to pay tribute on social media.

“I just realised that as I grow older, I still go back to that. With the Daft Punk guys it is so simple; it’s a kick and a clap. I did a lot of research around disco and funk because that’s where it began. That really helped me understand the whole thing of house music. Those guys will teach you how to make something easy and very groovy.”

Sun-El has put all of those influences to good use over the last year, using the extra downtime provided by the pandemic to release his second album, To The World And Beyond, a three-hour musical opus containing 31 tracks and 26 different collaborations.

“My second album was not mine. On this one I was basically telling stories. Those are not my stories. Those are the artists’ [stories]. I was just providing a platform in terms of sound. I want to give all these beautiful artists a voice.”

You can hear more from Sun-El Musician on This is Africa this Saturday, on BBC World Service radio and partner stations across Africa.
